Chalcot Cardigan is a cosy oversized cardigan, worked from the top down in Reverse Half Fisherman’s rib stitch.

First the back is worked back and forth with increases either side. Stitches are then picked up along the back yoke to form each front whilst shaping the neck and subsequently the underarms. The front is then joined with the back and worked back and forth for the remainder of the body. Stitches are picked up around the armhole for the sleeves, which are worked in the round. All edges are worked in a half-twisted rib and bound off using the Italian Bind-off technique. A double-knit button band is worked on both side of the cardigan. Finally, stitches are picked up and knitted in twisted rib along the neck edge and then folded over and secured towards the wrong side.

Yoke depth:

Gauge:
16.5 sts x 32 rows in double knit on 4.5mm needles (button band)
15 sts x 32 rows in Reverse Half Fisherman’s rib (stitched in the row below) on 5mm needles = 10 x 10 cm after blocking.
Nb) Please note that 32 rows in Reverse Half Fisherman’s rib stitch are counted as 16 knit stitches. It can be easier to count your stitches on the wrong side of your work when working this stitch.

Take care not to overstretch your garment whilst it is wet as this can cause the Reverse Half Fisherman’s rib stitch to grow irreversibly; the growth amount may vary depending on the yarn used. It is recommended to gently steam block this garment.
